When I tell people I am a client strategist they usually ask, “What actually is a client strategist?” Or I get similar questions such as, “What exactly do you do?” and “So, you’re an Account Executive like Pete Campbell on Mad Men?” Obviously there is a little confusion about the role of a client strategist. So, to set the record straight I am here to explain what a client strategist is and what we do.
Who We Are
At Go Local Interactive we define a client strategist as the person who provides strategic oversight and helps oversee day-to-day program operations for clients. Client strategists at Go Local Interactive are strong communicators, exceed in project management, and have a solid understanding of multiple media channels. Most of us client strategists at Go Local Interactive have worked on the product side of the agency world in areas such as SEO and Paid Search. Therefore, we understand technical terms and products which help us to better communicate campaign performances and recommend new products to clients.
What We Do
Alright, so now you know what a client strategist is but you may be wondering about the actual tasks we perform. Our main task is communicating with clients. If clients ever have a question or a request we are the people they contact. We review reports and communicate campaign performance with clients to make sure they truly understand what is and isn’t working.
Another big job for us client strategists is managing the various projects a client has. With the help of project management software and good organization skills, we make sure projects are completed on time and are within scope. Therefore, we work with all the product teams to make sure website requests are implemented, blog posts are ready to publish, etc.
Client strategists are also in charge of looking for opportunities. Since we provide the overall strategy of an account we are always looking for new products to recommend. Not only do we seek new opportunities we also look for products we can edit or remove. For example, if we notice a Paid Search campaign isn’t performing well in one market but is doing exceptionally well in another market then we would work with the Paid Search team to recommend ways to improve the performance. Or, if after a few months we believe money should be reallocated to another product or campaign then we will recommend shifting dollars.
How We’re Different
So, no we aren’t like Pete Campbell or Peggy Olson or any Mad Men character. Instead we are the “big picture” people for our clients. We believe our approach for client services set us apart from the typical account services. With our friendly demeanor, product knowledge, and experience, we strategists are not only fun to work with but make sure campaigns are clearly communicated and the overall goal of a client is being met.
