SEO Is Table Stakes. AI Search Is the New Game.

The real question in 2026 isn’t whether you rank — it’s whether AI answers include you at all. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview “what’s the best storage facility near me,” those platforms aren’t scrolling through a list of blue links. They’re pulling from a synthesized understanding of the web. And if your content isn’t structured to feed that understanding, you’re invisible in the conversation that increasingly happens before anyone ever clicks anything.
That’s the gap most operators are missing.
Two terms worth knowing
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content so AI platforms can find it, trust it, and reference it in generated responses. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the companion discipline — formatting your content to directly answer specific questions users are asking.
Together, they’re how you get cited instead of skipped.
What this actually looks like
Write content that answers real questions in plain language. “What size storage unit do I need for a two-bedroom apartment?” is a question. Answer it directly, completely, on its own dedicated page or FAQ entry. AI systems reward specificity and clarity — vague, keyword-stuffed content gets passed over.
Build authority signals. AI platforms synthesize from sources they trust. That means reviews, consistent business information, local backlinks, and content that demonstrates genuine expertise in self-storage — not just proximity to keywords.
Think beyond the homepage. GEO and AEO visibility often comes from a single FAQ answer, a well-written blog post, or a unit guide that happens to match exactly what someone asked. Your content strategy should be creating those assets consistently.
The uncomfortable truth
Traditional SEO isn’t dead. Local search still matters. Google Business Profile still matters. But the operators who win the next five years will be the ones building for both the search result and the AI answer — because those are increasingly two different things, serving two different moments in the customer journey.
The ranking you worked for gets you found. The AI citation gets you trusted before you’re even searched.
That’s the new game. Worth playing.
